Measurement and evaluation

Before-and-after study

Étude avant-après

Before-and-after study is an evaluation comparing conditions before and after an intervention using a stated method. Curb studies should account for seasonality, unrelated street changes, observation coverage, and comparison locations where possible, since a change following an intervention does not by itself establish that the intervention caused it.

Street design

Bike parking

Stationnement vélo

Bike parking is space and equipment intended for leaving bicycles securely between trips. At the curb, well-located racks or corrals can support access to destinations, while unsuitable rack spacing, vehicle overhang, and conflicts with pedestrian movement can reduce the number of practically usable positions.

Street design

Bollard

Borne de protection

Bollard is a short upright post used to guide movement, protect space, or restrict vehicle access. Curbside bollards may prevent parking encroachment, but their spacing, visibility, and placement must preserve accessible passage and accommodate emergency or service access where that access is required.

Street design

Bus bulb

Avancée de trottoir pour bus

Bus bulb is a sidewalk extension at a bus stop that allows a bus to serve passengers without pulling fully into a curbside parking lane. It can expand waiting space and reduce re-entry delay, while its geometry must support accessible boarding and safe interactions with cycling.

Street design

Bus stop

Arrêt de bus

Bus stop is a designated place where a bus service allows passengers to board and alight. Curbside stops need sufficient approach and departure space, understandable passenger information, and accessible connections; their operating area should remain usable even when neighboring parking and loading demand is high.
