Application programming interface (API)

Interface de programmation (API)

Application programming interface (API) is a defined way for software systems to request or exchange information and functions. In curb management, APIs can distribute regulations or observations, but their usefulness depends on shared meaning, authentication, versioning, availability, and documented responsibilities for correcting data and communicating operational changes.

Understanding the term

An API endpoint is an access mechanism, not a guarantee of accuracy or openness. Procurement should specify the data contract and operational service expected beyond basic connectivity.

An implementation should document its version, identifiers, time conventions, geographic accuracy, and supported fields. Test representative exchanges between the actual participating systems, including exceptions and updates. Assign responsibility for correcting discrepancies between published information, legal records, and the street. Collect only information needed for a defined purpose and apply suitable access and retention controls. A successful technical exchange does not by itself prove that the data is current, legally authoritative, or suitable for enforcement.
