Curb

Curb

Curb is the physical edge separating a roadway from its adjoining sidewalk or verge. In curb management, the word also describes the wider street-edge interface where parking, loading, transit access, drainage, and pedestrian activities compete for limited public space and safe connections.

Understanding the term

A raised curb is a construction element; an operational curb zone is a regulated area. Surveys should distinguish the two, since a continuous physical edge may contain several legal uses and accessible routes with different time restrictions.

Planning begins with a location-specific statement of the problem and the public function that needs protection. Field observations should be compared with the applicable legal record, including exceptions and temporary changes. Document the users affected, the period examined, and the alternatives available nearby. An evaluation should test access, safety, and operational reliability together, because moving an activity elsewhere can transfer a conflict rather than resolve it.
