Automated enforcement
Contrôle automatisé
Automated enforcement is the use of automated systems to detect possible violations or support enforcement processing. It may involve cameras, sensors, or database checks, but legal authority, evidential standards, human review, error correction, notice, and appeal procedures determine how automated observations can lead to a lawful decision.
Understanding the term
Detection and adjudication are separate steps. A system may reliably detect presence while lacking the information needed to assess exemptions, payment corrections, or an emergency stop.
The applicable rule is determined by the competent authority and its legal instruments. Check the geographic extent, effective period, eligible activities, exceptions, and procedures before applying a general term to a specific street. Align public information and field signs with the operative rule, and provide a practical route for questions or corrections. Monitoring should assess the intended access and safety outcomes, not merely the number of permissions issued or penalties recorded.
