Green infrastructure

Infrastructure verte

Green infrastructure is a network of planted or nature-based elements used to manage environmental conditions and support public-space quality. At the curb, rain gardens, trees, and planted extensions can interact with loading, visibility, utilities, drainage, and maintenance, requiring integrated design rather than isolated landscaping decisions.

Understanding the term

Planting choices affect long-term clearances and maintenance needs. Assess mature vegetation and seasonal conditions so that growth does not obstruct signs, crossings, or accessible boarding areas.

Design assessment should follow the complete paths of people and vehicles through the location. Check visibility, drainage, accessible passage, delivery handling, and maintenance under realistic operating conditions. An apparently adequate plan can fail when doors open, vehicles turn, or queues form. Record site constraints and the governing design guidance, then review the arrangement after installation so that changing activity and seasonal conditions do not invalidate the intended function.
