Street design

Street furniture

Mobilier urbain

Street furniture is the collection of installed objects supporting street activities, including benches, bins, shelters, signs, and lighting. Their combined placement shapes how curb areas function; individually useful objects can collectively create obstacles if responsibilities, clear routes, and maintenance access are not coordinated.

Understanding the term

A furniture inventory should include the footprint and operational clearance, not only a point location. A bin opening or shelter queue can require space beyond the object itself.

Design assessment should follow the complete paths of people and vehicles through the location. Check visibility, drainage, accessible passage, delivery handling, and maintenance under realistic operating conditions. An apparently adequate plan can fail when doors open, vehicles turn, or queues form. Record site constraints and the governing design guidance, then review the arrangement after installation so that changing activity and seasonal conditions do not invalidate the intended function.
