Curb cut

Bateau d’accès

Curb cut is a lowered or interrupted section of curb that permits movement between the roadway and adjoining land. It often serves a driveway, and its presence can affect parking eligibility, pedestrian continuity, drainage, and conflict between turning vehicles and people using the sidewalk.

Understanding the term

A driveway crossing differs from a pedestrian curb ramp. An inventory should record the function and legal access status rather than assuming every lowered curb serves the same purpose.

Design assessment should follow the complete paths of people and vehicles through the location. Check visibility, drainage, accessible passage, delivery handling, and maintenance under realistic operating conditions. An apparently adequate plan can fail when doors open, vehicles turn, or queues form. Record site constraints and the governing design guidance, then review the arrangement after installation so that changing activity and seasonal conditions do not invalidate the intended function.
