Curb management

Curb demand

Demande d’accès au curb

Curb demand is the quantity and timing of requests to use street-edge space for particular activities. Demand includes trips that successfully obtain access and unmet needs, so observed occupancy alone cannot reveal how many users avoid an area, wait elsewhere, or stop in unauthorized locations.

Understanding the term

Demand should be described by activity, time, and required access conditions. A short parcel handover and assisted passenger boarding may occupy similar space but require different durations and cannot always use interchangeable locations.

Planning begins with a location-specific statement of the problem and the public function that needs protection. Field observations should be compared with the applicable legal record, including exceptions and temporary changes. Document the users affected, the period examined, and the alternatives available nearby. An evaluation should test access, safety, and operational reliability together, because moving an activity elsewhere can transfer a conflict rather than resolve it.
