Transport equity

Équité des transports

Transport equity is the consideration of how transport benefits, costs, and access opportunities are distributed among people and communities. For curb policy, equity examines who gains usable access, who bears charges or displacement, and whether decisions account for differing needs rather than assuming all users have equivalent alternatives.

Understanding the term

Equity analysis should identify affected groups and measurable access outcomes. Equal prices or identical time limits can have different effects where incomes, disabilities, or transport options differ.

Assess the entire journey rather than a single compliant feature. A person must be able to approach, transfer, orient themselves, and continue to the destination under actual operating conditions. Engage people with varied access needs and document the applicable local requirements. Guidance from another jurisdiction can inform design thinking, but it does not replace the standards adopted by the responsible authority or the need to maintain access during works and daily operations.
