Sensing and privacy
LiDAR
LiDAR
LiDAR is a sensing technique that uses laser light to measure distances and form spatial representations of surroundings. It can support curb geometry surveys or object detection, while line of sight, surface properties, positioning, and processing choices affect the accuracy and completeness of the resulting street-edge dataset.
Understanding the term
A point cloud records observed surfaces rather than legal uses. Linking a surveyed curb to regulations still requires classification, validation, and review of the applicable source documents.
Validate the measurement against an independent reference under representative conditions. Record uncertainty, coverage, missing intervals, and the difference between a raw observation and an inferred activity. Technical outputs should be used only for purposes they can support reliably. Assign responsibility for calibration, corrections, access, and retention, and assess privacy across the complete data flow. An operational dashboard can conceal measurement errors if it displays precise values without their method or limitations.
