Emergency access

Accès des secours

Emergency access is the space and operational conditions needed for emergency services to reach incidents and carry out their work. Curb allocations, street furniture, temporary occupations, and parked vehicles must be assessed against local emergency requirements, with procedures that keep necessary routes and working areas available when needed.

Understanding the term

Emergency access review should involve the responsible services and realistic operating scenarios. A nominally removable obstruction is not an adequate solution if no reliable removal process exists.

The applicable rule is determined by the competent authority and its legal instruments. Check the geographic extent, effective period, eligible activities, exceptions, and procedures before applying a general term to a specific street. Align public information and field signs with the operative rule, and provide a practical route for questions or corrections. Monitoring should assess the intended access and safety outcomes, not merely the number of permissions issued or penalties recorded.
