Curb ramp

Abaissé de trottoir

Curb ramp is a sloped connection that allows people to move between a sidewalk and a roadway or other lower surface. At the curb, its usability depends on alignment, gradients, landing space, surface quality, and an unobstructed connection at both ends of the transition.

Understanding the term

A compliant ramp can still be unusable if a parked vehicle blocks its lower end. Protect the approach area through design, regulation, and maintenance.

Assess the entire journey rather than a single compliant feature. A person must be able to approach, transfer, orient themselves, and continue to the destination under actual operating conditions. Engage people with varied access needs and document the applicable local requirements. Guidance from another jurisdiction can inform design thinking, but it does not replace the standards adopted by the responsible authority or the need to maintain access during works and daily operations.
